Bolanle Oladimeji

I had many long nights and many moments of doubt while participating in ActivateWork’s 15-week network support training program. But she refused to give up.

“If I start a plan, I need to finish it,” explained Bolanle, who goes by Bola. “I would talk to myself in the mirror and tell myself not to quit.”

Turns out there were a lot of people counting on Bola – friends who thought the program sounded too good to be true or too difficult to conquer. They wanted Bola to test the waters. If she could succeed, then they maybe they could gain the confidence to apply.

So Bola persevered. She drew support from her fellow learners. She asked instructors for help and dedicated countless hours to tackling the coursework. She now has CompTIA, A+, and Google IT certifications and is interviewing for network administrator positions.

Bola has wanted to work in technology since earning an associate’s degree in mass communication in her native Nigeria. She spent the first several years of her career as a graphic designer, but after moving to the United States two years ago, she switched gears and became a caregiver to both adults battling dementia and children with developmental disabilities.

The idea of working in IT, particularly cybersecurity, however, still called to her.

Last year, she began searching for information on career training online and stumbled upon CrossPurpose, a nonprofit ActivateWork partner. After taking one of the organization’s assessments, she was referred to ActivateWork powered by Per Scholas, and the rest is history.

Bola says the program, which includes 100 hours in professional development, career, and life skills coaching, not only equipped her with in-demand IT skills, but also helped her come out of her shell and gain more confidence.

Bola is now focused on gaining real-world networking support experience and hopes to eventually return to ActivateIT for cybersecurity training.

“I have succeeded beyond my expectations,” she said.

How It Works 

Getting into an ActivateWork training program takes commitment—and that’s by design. Our admissions process is structured to help identify individuals who are ready to do the work, stay the course, and succeed in a full-time tech career. If that sounds like you, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Our process includes several steps to ensure the program is a good fit—and to give you a strong foundation for success from day one.

1. Complete the Eligibility Screening—It’s free and takes just a few minutes via the Per Scholas website.
2. Attend an Admissions Overview—Learn about the rest of the Admissions Process and important program details during a virtual webinar with one of our staff members.
3. Complete Baseline Assessments—Complete either an academic assessment, a tech assessment, or both, as required by the selected training course, to gauge your aptitude for the course or courses you’re most interested in.
4. Interview Questionnaire—We’ll send you a link to the pre-interview questionnaire, which should be completed before your admissions interview.
5. Complete Course Pre-Work—Engage with introductory topics that ensure you are prepared for your first day of technical training. Applicants are strongly encouraged to start the pre-work as soon as they apply to gauge whether the material interests them. 
6. Admissions Interview—You’ll connect with someone from our team to share your interests, experience, and commitment to proceeding with the program and discuss the pre-work you’ve completed thus far. (Note: Some courses require pre-work to be completed before the Admissions Interview. See course descriptions for more details.)
7. Background Check—Using a fair and efficient platform called Checkr, you will receive a secure link, provide the necessary virtual consents and complete the required screening information. Background check results will be provided to both the applicant and ActivateWork.
8. Admissions Decision—Our team will consider all the information we’ve learned about you from the eligibility and admissions process to determine whether to extend you an offer to join the course. Please note that this application process is very competitive and not all applicants will be accepted for the limited number of available slots.
9. Onboarding—Our team will work with you to ensure all the necessary documents are submitted and that you are set up for success when you begin training. Acceptance offers are contingent on completing the pre-work before the program start date, passing a background check, and submitting required eligibility documents.
